Penelope Blackwood in The Old Boathouse

Hi, I’m Penelope Blackwood.

Kerris Confidential launched as a one-woman operation and has remained a one-woman operation ever since, despite several suggestions that I might benefit from help, an editor, or at minimum someone to tell me when a post is too long.

I am Penelope Blackwood. I have lived in Kerris Bay all my life. I have a journalism degree, a moderately excessive number of opinions, and the reasonable assumption that I would move away to work in the big city. Kerris Bay had other ideas. It usually does.

Kerris Confidential covers the news, events, history, and general texture of life in and around Kerris Bay. This includes planning disputes, harbour incidents, local business openings and closings, coastal conditions, community events, and the occasional investigation that my more cautious friends suggest I should probably leave alone. I do not leave them alone. This has occasionally caused difficulty and has never once felt like the wrong call.

The Practical Bit

Kerris Confidential is free to read. It is supported by the loyalty of its readers, the occasional local advertisement, and a coffee machine at the Old Boathouse that I have become, frankly, dependent on.

If you have a tip, a story, a planning document you think I should see, or information about anything unusual happening in the town or headland, you can contact me through the page on this site. I respond to everything. I respond faster to things that are interesting.

If you'd like to support the newsletter, the best thing you can do is tell someone else about it. The second best thing is to subscribe, if you haven't already.

What We Cover

Local news, reported accurately and without fear of the wrong shade of yellow.

The harbour, the coast, and everything that happens on, in, and around the water.

Kerris Bay history, which is considerably more interesting than the tourist board would have you believe.

Community events, including but not limited to the Annual Zombie Walk, the Surf Festival, and whatever is currently happening with the fish.

Investigations. When something in this village doesn't add up, Kerris Confidential adds it up.

A Note On Sources

Kerris Confidential protects its sources. Always has, always will. If you tell me something in confidence, it stays in confidence. This village is small and people talk, and I am aware of the irony of a local journalist saying that, but there it is.

I have been asked, more than once, whether I check my facts before publishing. Yes. Twice, usually. Three times if Dan Maddox is involved, because he has opinions about accuracy that he expresses at length and I have learned to get ahead of them.

Stay In Touch

Kerris Confidential publishes when there is something worth publishing, which in Kerris Bay is most days.
